Green Grass hotel

Been for an Italian tonight at the green grass hotel ... Strange name? Maybe it's reticent of the green green grass of home? Anyway, 'twas an Italian and the waiter painstakingly explained to me that penne pasta was not noodles....yes I know this!

Toad in the hole

We spent some time in Sichuan province...this is the place where food is HOT! We have a version of this in the UK but it is nowhere near as hot as the real thing...

The first problem is the menu...indecipherable...unfortunately this does lead to my colleagues ordering some strange things, in this case, toad. To be honest it simply tasted like chicken...

Brighton

For our first wedding anniversary, we took the day off work and headed down to Brighton on the train. Neither of us had been before but it's just at the end of our train line. It was a great day weather wise although it was a little on the chilly side...
They had some amazing artwork in The Lanes...
Afterwards, we headed into London for a Groupon Cheese and Wine evening, preceeded by a quick drink in the bar across from St Paul's...

Christmas meal

My parents bought us a cheese and wine evening at Netherstowe house last Xmas which we had never used. It expired this Xmas so we thought we really ought it make use of it! The food was delicious and the cheese and wine were both really really good...apparently the cheese was the best in the country..

Asia...

Spent some time in Asia on a recent trip. Went to Singapore, then Malaysia, Indonesia and on to Beijing.

I also took a Bike tour with Bike Beijing. That was really excellent! www.bikebeijing.com

Also, some rather interesting delicacies...

Vinopolis

For a wedding present, the guys at work bought SJ and I a voucher for a meal, tour, wine, beer, rum, whisky, Bombay Sapphire cocktail and absinthe tasting at Vinopolis in London. We'd been here before but not had the full experience...

It started off with a very nice email, plus a glass of the house red....then the main event...tasting of 6 wines each, two beers, two whiskies, a Bombay Sapphire cocktail, an absinthe and a whisky! Well, we didn't actually make it to the beers, but we did try all of the others. The wines were superb - it was split into European, American and New World sections. All were good, although the New World edged it for me...

I'd never had absinthe before and this was strong stuff...there are two ways you can take it apparently, French or Czech - I preferred the Czech way!

Gilgamesh

Got back from India and then went straight out for...an Indian! Well, to be fair, we thought it was an Indian but it actually turned out to be Thai! We went to Gilgamesh, a well-recommended restaurant in Camden. We had the best table in the house - a circular one, up on a plinth...fantastic! We had some friends over from Phoenix and also met up with J & P. interestingly enough, the "Fonz" was in there as well!

South Africa

Just after I came back from Israel, I then had to travel to Johannesburg for a week. I've been before but there's something about Jo'burg that makes me uneasy. Last visit was a couple of years ago when they were preparing for the World Cup. I think they had a lot of migrant workers in then because this time round I didn't feel as uneasy - you still have to be on your guard mind!

I stayed in Sandton at the Holiday Inn and flew with South African Airlines. Both were good.

The food has to be the highlight though - I've still yet to have prawns quite like the South African ones. This time as well, we also went to a restaurant called Carnivore - was exactly what it said on the tin...lots and lots of meat!

Food & Drink of Paris

What a gastronomic feast...luckily our hotel was just outside some of the best eateries in Paris - we ate at Le Dome on the Saturday night which was good, but not as good as it could have been I reckon. Very, very expensive though!

Just opposite was a seafood place which just had the most amazing Seafood platter's - literally everything you could think of...

Queenstown - In Ferg We Trust

After a couple of nights in Te Anau, it was back up the road to Queenstown. This is the Extreme Sports capital of the world and home to the Karau Bridge Bungy - the Original. It was actually getting quite cold as the ski season in the Remarkables was not far away.

We managed to find a Chip shop called PJ's...just perfect and we just had to have a FergBurger - quite simply one of the nicest Burger's I've ever had - the queue was out of the shop and around the corner!

We also took a Jet Boat ride down the Shotover river...absolutely fantastic - these boats are amazingly fast and very versatile. We were skimming along in inches of water - truly awesome!
